homeschooling in CA the law

California is a compulsory attendance state (EC 48200), meaning children between the ages of 6 and 18 must attend either a public school, a private school or be tutored by a California credentialed teacher. (see chart)

Homeschooling is not mentioned in California law. Instead, families who desire to educate their children at home can establish a private school in their own home, educate their children at home using a private school satellite program, educate their children at home using a public school program or they can hire a credentialed teacher to teach their child(ren) at home.

Notice that kindergarten is not required by law (as most children enter kindergarten at age 5 and CA law only requires attendance in a school starting at age 6). If you have questions about whether your child needs to be enrolled in a school (public, private or private homeschool) then click here for more detailed information.
