How is my youngest child old enough for 1st grade?!?! This is the seventh time I’ve taught first grade as a homeschool mom and every time has been different. I have learned that the key is finding what works best for each unique child. So here is a look at our 1st grade homeschool curriculum choices for the 2022-2023 homeschool year.

Homeschool Curriculum Choices
This year I’ll have six children to homeschool. Because it’s impossible for me to teach every subject to each of my kids, I’ll be using some video lessons and multi-age learning to assist me in educating my kids at home.
Family Learning
This year we will be gathering together as a family for morning basket time, lunchtime Bible and logic lessons, and evening family devotions. I shared more about what we are doing during these times and what resources we are using in this blog post.

Group Learning
I’m putting my first grader and third grader together for history and literature lessons. I’m so excited to be using curriculum from Notgrass History with all of my kids this year! My first grader and 3rd grader will be using Our Star-Spangled Story along with their literature recommendations.
Learning One-On-One with Mom
One of the subjects I like to teach to my younger kids is English. Our focus this year will be phonics and reading along with handwriting. Once he makes more progress in these areas, we will add in spelling.
Here is what my first grader will be using:
Independent Learning
My son really enjoyed his BJU Press K5 math video lessons last year and is excited to use their first grade math curriculum this homeschool year. He will also be using the BJU Press Science 1 video lessons for science. BJU Press video lessons have been a life saver for me. My first grader is thrilled to have two video lessons to watch this year!

Hello Janelle, Can you tell me how BJU Math 1 with Videos went? Do you know if they “Pause the Program” at all, or much, in the Math 1 videos? It can be tough for younger ones to manage. Kind thanks 🙂
Hi Sunny,
My son loved BJU Math 1 with the videos but we used it before it was recently updated. It looks like they have a brand new math 1 video that came out this year (2025). You can watch one of the video lessons on their website. Hopefully that will help you determine if it would work for your child or not.
