Escape from Rome by Kathryn Butler is a fun and engaging “decide-as-you-go” adventure for children ages 8–12. The story begins with you spending the summer with your aunt, an artifact restorer, and your cousin. But when a mysterious blue light appears, you suddenly find yourself transported back to ancient Rome during the reign of Nero and the persecution of Christians. As you make choices throughout the story, your decisions determine what happens next—and with 13 possible endings, there are plenty of opportunities to go back and experience a completely different adventure! Each new section also begins with a Bible verse to encourage children to consider biblical wisdom as they decide which path to take.

The different endings make this book especially fun and interactive. Depending on the choices you make, you might return safely to your aunt’s home, begin another adventure, remain in ancient Rome, or even die. Parents should be aware that, because of the historical setting and persecution of Christians during Nero’s reign, children may encounter some intense situations, such as being in the Colosseum with a lion or experiencing the Great Fire of Rome. Some endings result in death, although they are not gruesome. For example, one ending describes the character falling asleep amid the smoke of ancient Rome and waking “unafraid in the presence of Jesus.” Parents will want to consider their individual child’s maturity and sensitivity to these situations.

Overall, Escape from Rome is a creative and historically interesting read. This is the second book in Kathryn Butler’s “decide-as-you-go adventures” series, and adventures from the first book, The Hunt for the Kraken, are mentioned throughout this story. Children may enjoy reading the books in order, although it isn’t necessary to understand or enjoy Escape from Rome. With its interactive format, multiple endings, biblical themes, and fascinating historical setting, this is a fun choice for kids who enjoy adventure and having a say in where the story goes!
